What are the best treats for your cats?

Feed Your Cats a range of healthy treats

It’s difficult to find store-bought cat treats that are aren’t full of additives and other chemicals. Even looking online for healthy cat treats can be a pain and time-consuming, especially if you don’t know what ingredients to avoid. It’s fine to feed your cat commercial treats every now again, but not all the time. Instead of using store-bought treats next time you reward your cat, try some healthy snacks instead. Here are some good healthy food ideas to feed your cat.

Fish

Cats love fish and it’s very good for them. Full of protein and omega-3, fish is a great healthy snack your cat will adore. Salmon, crab, tuna, and herring are some types of fish your cat will enjoy. You could also try feeding your cat fish oil capsules.

Lean Meat

Lean meats like turkey and chicken are good choices to feed your cat. They’re not very fatty and contain a lot of protein. Cats are carnivorous by nature, which means they require a high-protein diet, so meat is very beneficial for cats.

Eggs

Eggs are packed full of goodness – calcium, protein, and iron, and other healthy nutrients. Make sure you use no seasoning or oil/butter when you cook eggs for your cat. Never give your cats raw eggs as they could cause salmonella or E. coli poisoning.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is known to be very good for dogs, but it is also great for cats! Pumpkin is high in fibre and beneficial for cats suffering with upset tummies. If your cat is constipated, pumpkin can help get its bowels moving. Additionally, if your cat is suffering from diarrhoea, pumpkin can help firm up its stools.

Vegetables

Although most cats won’t touch vegetables, you could still try offering them to your cat. Vegetables are very healthy and packed with minerals, so if you can coax your cat to eat them, that’s a huge plus! Some good examples are cooked broccoli and asparagus, carrots, and raw cucumber (although, some cats appear to fear this weird long veggie!).

Hard Cheese

Most cats have lactose intolerance, which means they lack the enzymes in their gut to process dairy products. However, hard cheeses like cheddar can be a good source of calcium and protein when fed in small amounts. Milk, cream, and other fatty milk products should be avoided as they can make your cat sick.

Bananas

Bananas are a good source of potassium and fibre for your cat. However, make sure you feed this treat in moderation as bananas contain a lot of sugar.

Melon

Certain types of melons are full of nutrients and antioxidants that are great for your cat. They’re also full of water, which means they’re good to feed your cat on hot days. Like bananas, melons have a high sugar content, so make sure you feed them in moderation. Cantaloupes, honeydew melons, and watermelons are all safe for your cat to enjoy.
